There is one Saturday every August when Del Mar stops being a quiet coastal village and becomes the center of American racing. This year it's August 22 — the 36th running of the $1-million Pacific Classic — and the field just drew. The Pacific Classic has anchored Del Mar's summer meet since 1991, when Best Pal took the inaugural running. In the decades since, the mile-and-a-quarter has produced some of the sport's defining afternoons — Candy Ride's still-standing 1:59.11 track record in 2003, Beholder becoming the first filly or mare to win it in 2015, California Chrome the following year, and Flightline's astonishing 19¼-length demolition in 2022. Fierceness took last year's edition and went on to be voted Del Mar's Horse of the Meet.

It is a Breeders' Cup "Win And You're In" race. The winner earns an automatic berth in the Breeders' Cup Classic. That status is why the barn area fills with shippers from Kentucky, New Jersey, and — this year — Japan.

The 2026 Pacific Classic Field

Eleven horses drew into the Classic. Bill Mott's Knightsbridge is the 5/2 morning-line favorite off a 10¼-length demolition of the Grade III Monmouth Cup, with Junior Alvarado up from post 11.

A few storylines worth knowing before you're standing at the rail:

Knightsbridge arrives as the one to beat, and Mott rarely ships west without conviction. Full Serrano, the 2024 Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile winner, gives John Sadler a live local runner with Joel Rosario aboard. Subsanador brings Richard Mandella and Mike Smith together — a pairing that has won more big California afternoons than almost any other, and the Argentine-bred worked a bullet five furlongs in :58.80 into the race. Hit Show has a Dubai World Cup on his résumé for Brad Cox. Finger is the international wild card, a Japanese-based son of Gun Runner who cleared quarantine after flying into LAX. And Om N Joy is the sentimental one — a filly taking on the boys for trainer Aggie Ordonez with Kent Desormeaux riding, fresh off a Grade II Santa Margarita win and a second in the Grade I Clement L. Hirsch.

What Race Day Actually Looks Like

Gates open at noon. First post is 2 p.m. for a ten-race card, and the Classic goes late in the afternoon as the light drops over the backstretch and the marine layer starts rolling in off the water — the single best hour of the Del Mar year.

The Classic doesn't run alone. The supporting card is one of the strongest of the meet: the Del Mar Oaks (G1) presented by Keeneland Sales, the Del Mar Mile (G2), and the Green Flash Handicap (G3), itself a Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint qualifier. There's a wagering seminar at 1:05 p.m. for anyone who wants to arrive informed, and the Pacific Classic Betting Challenge runs alongside the card.

Dress accordingly. Del Mar's crowd takes this seriously — linen, panama hats, and the kind of understated tailoring that reads as effortless. Parking opens at 10:30 a.m., and it goes quickly.

Why This Matters If You Live in Del Mar Village

Here is the part most visitors never register.

For residents of Del Mar Village, the Beach Colony, and Olde Del Mar, race day is a walk. Not a drive, not a shuttle, not a $60 rideshare surge from Carmel Valley. A walk. You leave the house at 1:30, you're at the rail by 2, and you're home for dinner on your own terrace before the last of the traffic clears Via de la Valle.

That proximity is precisely what buyers are purchasing in this pocket of the coast, and it extends well beyond seven weeks of racing. The Del Mar Fairgrounds hosts the San Diego County Fair, the fall Bing Crosby meet, and a calendar of concerts and events that runs most of the year. Del Mar Village puts Camino del Mar's restaurants, Powerhouse Park, and the beach within the same walkable radius. Del Mar Heights and Del Mar Terrace trade a few blocks of that walkability for elevation and ocean views, and buyers weigh that tradeoff constantly.

What I tell clients: in Del Mar, you are not buying square footage. You are buying a radius. The homes that hold value most stubbornly here are the ones where the answer to "can I walk there?" is yes — to the track, to the sand, to a table on Camino del Mar. Inventory inside that radius is genuinely scarce, and it rarely sits.

The Long View

Communities with a genuine cultural anchor behave differently in a real estate cycle. The Pacific Classic is 36 years old. The Fairgrounds have been running races since 1937, when Bing Crosby himself greeted guests at the gate. That kind of institutional permanence is not a marketing story — it is a durable, structural reason demand for Del Mar property does not evaporate when the broader market cools.
