There is a reason I tell relocating buyers to visit in September rather than July. August is North County performing. September is North County at home — the same coastline, the same climate, without the traffic or the seasonal surge. It is the most accurate preview of daily life this calendar offers.

Del Mar's Closing Weekend: September 5–7
The 2026 Del Mar summer meet, which opened July 17, ends on Labor Day — and the final three days are among the strongest of the season.
Saturday, September 5 carries the Grade I Del Mar Debutante alongside the Grade III Del Mar Juvenile Turf and the Tranquility Lake Stakes, paired with the track's BBQ & Beer Festival. Sunday, September 6 brings the Grade I Del Mar Futurity, the Shared Belief Stakes, and the Del Mar Juvenile Fillies Turf, with Family Fun Day programming. Monday, September 7 — Closing Day — is headlined by the Grade II John C. Mabee Stakes and the I'm Smokin Stakes.
One logistical note worth knowing: closing weekend is the only deviation from the meet's 2:00 p.m. first post. September 5, 6, and 7 all start at 1:30 p.m. Arrive on the summer schedule and you will miss the first two races.

Cardiff Greek Festival: September 12–13
Now in its fifth decade, the Cardiff Greek Festival is the most beloved food event on this stretch of coast. It runs Saturday, September 12, from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m., and Sunday, September 13, from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., at Saints Constantine and Helen Greek Orthodox Church on Manchester Avenue in Cardiff-by-the-Sea.
Expect traditional Greek cooking, live music, and dance performances that run all day. Free general and accessible parking is available in the adjacent MiraCosta College lot — take it, because Manchester fills quickly.
This is the kind of event that explains Cardiff better than any listing description. It is unpretentious, multigenerational, and packed with people who live within a mile of it.
Sessions Surf Festival: September 12–19
Encinitas hosts a full week of surf culture as the Sessions Surf Festival — formerly the Solento Surf Festival — returns to the coastline. The 2026 edition spans seven days of live music, surf films, art exhibitions, and community gatherings staged across Encinitas and the surrounding coast.

Encinitas Cruise Night: September 17
On Thursday, September 17, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., classic and specialty cars line South Coast Highway 101 through downtown Encinitas. It is free, family-friendly, and quintessentially local — a two-hour reminder that the 101 corridor is a main street before it is a highway.
ArtWalk Carlsbad: September 19–20
ArtWalk Carlsbad returns to Armada Drive, on the bluff above the Flower Fields, with more than 150 fine artists traveling from across the United States and Mexico. Painting, sculpture, glass, photography, and fine jewelry sit alongside live music, food, and the KidsWalk interactive area.
Hours run 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday. Admission is free. The Armada Drive setting — ocean on one side, flower fields below — is the most scenic festival location in the county, and it is worth going early for the light.
Late September: Film and Oktoberfest
Saturday, September 26 brings the Banff Mountain Film Festival World Tour to the La Paloma Theatre in Encinitas at 7 p.m. — outdoor adventure and mountain culture in a 1928 theater that is a landmark in its own right.
Sunday, September 27 closes the month with the 30th Annual Encinitas Oktoberfest on Mountain Vista Drive, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Free to attend, it honors the German roots of the Olivenhain settlement with an authentic beer garden, Bavarian music and dance, a craft beer garden, an international food court, local artisans, and carnival rides. Thirty years in, it remains one of the largest community gatherings on the North County calendar.

Dates, hours, and lineups shift. Confirm with each organizer before you plan — the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club for racing and post times, the Cardiff Greek Festival and Encinitas Oktoberfest official sites, ArtWalk San Diego for Carlsbad, and the La Paloma Theatre for Banff.
